Position Summary:

Reviews charts and other documents in order to assess the quality of information, to abstract data and to prepare reports and summaries of abstracted information to ensure quality data. Findings of reports are used for performance improvement.

Requirements

Education/Experience and Licensing/Certification Requirements: Equivalent to graduation from high school and one (1) year of coding experience in a health care setting. Positions in this class require possession of one or more of the following:
National Cancer Registry Association
Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
Certified Practice Coder (CPC)
Certified Tumor Registrar - (CTR)
Certified Coding Specialist - Physician based (CCS-P)
Certified Practice Coder - Hospital based (CPC-H)
Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
Registered Health Information Technician(RHIT)

Prefer: Two (2) years of Hospital Coding experience.

Knowledge of: Office theories and principles; Terminology used in area of assignment; departmental policies and procedures; In-depth knowledge of specialized discipline in area of assignment; Laws, codes, rules and regulations governing area of assignment; department and hospital safety practices and procedures; patient rights; infection control policies and practices; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures.

Skill in: Reviewing and abstracting information; Data collection, manipulation and retrieval;
Reviewing and checking documents to ensure completeness and accuracy; Reporting inconsistencies and discrepancies with established standards and guidelines; Preparing technical reports; Paying attention to detail and accuracy; Using computers and related software applications; Efficiently effectively and safely using office equipment such as phones, copiers, facsimiles and adding machines; Communicating with a wide variety of people from a diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds in an effective manner; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard equipment, sit and retain concentration for extended periods of time, vision to read printed materials and VDT screens, and hearing and speech to communicate effectively in-person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this classification.
